How should I approach a coffee chat? Are they Important?

“Coffee chats are super important for getting to know the directors of the committee you’re applying to and the rest of the exec or board team. They’re casual but still professional—an opportunity to connect with someone in the club, hear about their experiences, and pick up some helpful insights. To make the most of a coffee chat, do a little research on the person, have some thoughtful questions ready, and most importantly, just be yourself! It’s a chance for us to get to know you beyond your application and resume, and it’s also a great way for you to ask any questions you have about the recruitment process.”

- Britney Doan | Beauty Director

Do you have any interview tips or advice?

“Interviews are all about showing us your authentic self and how you think, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through! Don’t worry about being perfect and taking time to think about the question -- we’re more interested in how you approach problems and communicate your ideas -- that thoughtfulness is actually a bonus! Most importantly, treat it as a two-way learning experience and a chance to advocate for your values towards making changes within the entertainment and business world. We're so curious to learn about you!”

- Fiona Rhee | Vice President of Business Affairs

What are directors looking for in a Committee Member (CM) or General Member (GM)?

“We prioritize passion over everything; we want to see that you are excited to work on these projects and join the club, rather than having the most knowledge or experience. Everything is teachable, so we want to see how your unique perspective and skillset continues to make BCEC the Best Club Ever Created! GM is especially great to develop your confidence in consulting, while working on exciting projects and forming a strong sense of community at Cal.”

- Lily Salazar | GM Director

What is the best part about being in BCEC?

“The best part about being in BCEC is the community. As a transfer student knowing no one, BCEC gave me some of my closest friends that I have continued friendships with long after the consulting project. It's allowed me to grow professionally through the projects, adding vastly to my resume, personally through the soft skills of collaboration and communication, and socially through the countless friendships I've made among my committee as well as fellow BCEC members outside my committee.”

- Mathias Yamakoshi | External Vice President

What is the hardest part about the application process?

“The hardest part I think always comes down to the final interview, I think genuinely just being yourself showing your passion/knowledge of the industry but also your willingness to learn, grow, and gain new experiences from bcec will make you stand out. And take a breath!! Realize that we are all ALSO students!”

- Christine Doan | Fashion Director

What is something you wish you knew when you were applying?

“Don't be stressed! At the end of the day we are all college students so just come as the amazing person you are and don't overthink too much.”

- Sandy Nguyen | DM Director
